The Republic of Vanuatu, formerly the Anglo-French condominium of the New Hebrides, consists of 66 islands situated in the SW Pacific Ocean, about 1,200 miles NW of Australia. Over 130 different languages are spoken among its 146,400 people. Vanuatu achieved independence (from the French) on 30  July 1980.
